About Child Proofing Our Communities

The Child Proofing Our Communities Campaign (CPOC) is a project of the Center for Health, Environment and Justice.  Created in 2000 out of the growing need to bring together groups across the nation working to protect children's health, CPOC assists parents, schools and community groups to protect children from toxic chemicals in the places they play, live and learn.  With a personal approach, CPOC helps parents, teachers and others sift through the growing information about children's environmental health issues and take steps to improve the lives and health of their children, students, and communities.

Aimed at connecting local efforts across the country, raising awareness of toxic threats to children's health, and promoting precautionary approaches most protective of children, CPOC specializes in issues such as safe pest control, green cleaning, and safe school site selection.

Each year, CPOC responds to hundreds of parents, teachers and groups who call for help or information about exposure to toxic chemicals.

CPOC's Green Flag Schools Program for Environmental Leadership provides a framework for schools to engage in environmental advocacy.  Through the program, students in grades K-12 learn environmental concepts, investigate their schools, and advocate school-wide reforms to make their schools safer and healthier.
