Al-Hikmah Elementary School
Al-Hikmah School in Prospect Park started off the year with an introductory assembly to receive their green flag.

The Sundance Channel filmed the assembly to include in a July episode of the new series, “Big Ideas for a Small Planet.”. Amanny Khattab, principal, said of Green Flag/GreenFaith, “The program is reinforcing what our faith already tells us, that the safety and security of the earth is the responsibility of each and every one of us…”
After introducing the issue of recycling with a school-wide Power Point presentation, the team committed to working on developing a recycling program. The school began their recycling efforts in a big way, with nearly one hundred students participating in a waste audit followed by a discussion. When Al-Hikmah began the program, they did not do any recycling. By the end of their first year, the school had recycling bins, and student-made recycling posters were posted throughout the school. For the first time, the sixth-grade class took an educational trip to the botanical gardens. Al-Hikmah along with its two sister schools in the state looked into green building options for their renovation project, including energy conservation measures, green building materials, solar panels, green cleaning, and recycled content paper.
