Academy of the Holy Angels
Academy of Holy Angels in Demarest held a school-wide waste audit, and subsequently added can and bottle collection to their recycling program.

Within just one week of the new program, they filled half a dumpster full of cans and bottles! They raised awareness about their improved recycling program through posting recycling flyers. With respect to improving air quality, the school sent no-idling pledges and letters home to parents. The biggest event of the year was an environmentally-focused awareness day with a showing of An Inconvenient Truth and over twenty workshops, some presentations student-led, with foci ranging from recycling to conflict diamonds. In addition to the school’s existing energy conservation measures, the school cut energy use by turning off the lights in the vending machines. The academy is currently working with a solar energy company to examine the feasibility of installing solar panels in the fall.
