Resurrection School
Resurrection School in Jersey City began the school year by tackling recycling. After holding a mini-trash audit to visually see their waste, the school implemented new recycling bins with student-made signs.

Student-led Green Flag ambassadors monitored the recycling in each classroom throughout the year and awarded rooms rated ‘excellent’. Resurrection also switched over to silverware from disposable plastic utensils, and students received training on the importance of recycling on several occasions.

The school’s newfound leadership shone when they collaborated with GreenFaith to pressure the Newark City incinerator to reduce their air pollutants. They signed affidavits, as members of GreenFaith, expressing their intent to participate in a citizen’s suit to get the emissions reduced at the incinerator. Additionally, with the encouragement of the parish priest, the school will be undertaking lighting retrofits in the entire building this summer, slashing their energy use by an anticipated 66%, and saving the school thousands of dollars. To culminate the successful year, the mayor of Jersey City gave the school a proclamation for its environmental efforts at the end of year Green Flag/GreenFaith ceremony.
