Groups Warn that Toys R Us’ Broken Promises May Be Toxic for Kids

Today CHEJ, the Teamsters Union, Clean New York, WE ACT for Environmental Justice, concerned parents, students and consumer activists protested toxic PVC plastic used in toys at the Toys R Us flagship store in Times Square.

Advocates Press EPA for Rigorous School Siting Standards
As the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) works to complete the first national Guidelines for the Siting of School Facilities, over one hundred environmental and children's health advocacy organizations have joined together to urge EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to set rigorous, child-protective standards for the location of new schools. More Harm than Good?
Children are much more likely to carry higher body burdens of toxic chemical that adults. In a recent study, children in the US were found to have 2.8 % higher PBDE levels that adults living in the same household and as high as 200 times the levels found in children in European countries. In fact, European researchers were shocked at the drastic differences in exposure between there and here. PBDEs have been linked to neurological and reproductive harm, thyroid disruption, and cancer.

Early onset of puberty points to toxics in our environment.
The danger of PBAs have been making headlines. Study after study have come out linking PBAs to endocrine disruption and the diseases associated with it. From obesity that leads to Types II diabetes in children and the early onset of puberty as it relates to obesity, it is clear that our children are facing a crisis! Whether this crisis is a direct consequence of PBAs or a combination of deadly toxics our children come in contact with, the best things we can do as parents, teachers and caregivers is to be informed, proactive, and strident in our fight to protect them.

Remediating Contaminated School Sites: A Lengthy and Expensive Process
In 2005, the EPA agreed to allow the city of New Bedford, Massachusetts to begin construction on their new middle school. >The proposed land sat atop the city’s 104 acre former landfill, the Parker Street Dump. Testing of surrounding school facilities including sports fields and the high school , inside and out doors, revealed PCBs, arsenic, lead, benzene, PVCs and more. Now 5 years and $12.7 million later, remediation continues.Click Here
